About Us & Our History
Carson is a small village sheltered in the heart of Southside Virginia. Two story houses shaded with oaks and maples line the village by-ways, stretching out into a landscape of tobacco, corn and peanut fields.
In Carson’s earliest days, members of the community desired a local church. Land was donated in 1910 by Peter Bernard Halligan, founder and William Thomas Scarborough. The cornerstone was laid on the site the same year. There were 14 chartered members. The church became known as Carson Methodist Episcopal South until 1939 when the name was changed to Methodist Church. In 1968, it became the United Methodist Church.
For years Carson Church was part of the East Dinwiddie Charge which was comprised of seven churches. In 1971, Carson became a two-point charge. With a step of faith Carson UMC became a station church in 1977 and the membership grew to 140.
The church structure changed with the addition of a new fellowship hall and kitchen in 1975 and an educational wing containing five classrooms and a Pastor’s study in 1981.
A picnic shelter was built to allow for other fellowship opportunities in 1984. In
preparation for the church's Centennial Celebration in 2010, the fellowship hall, kitchen and parking lot were renovated and enlarged and playground equipment was erected near the picnic shelter.
Carson United Methodist Church continues to grow and serve the local community. Please come and join us.
